Rand Revolt Graves in Braamfontein Cemetery

There are a number of Rand Revolt graves in Braamfontein Cemetery, although they are mostly related to police and military casualties, the civilians ended up mostly in Brixton. The grave of the Hanekom Brothers is interesting because it falls within what is roughly known as the “Prison plot”. There is a mass grave at the bottom of the cemetery close to the old railway lines where paupers and unidentified casualties of the Rand Revolt are buried. These are marked in the register as follows:

    4. Klopper (no info or death notice. Buried Braamfontein NC 23221) May be Coenrad Klopper. The name came up in the Jeremy Krikler book “White Rising: The 1922 Insurrection and Racial Killing in South Africa” page 294. In Fordsburg, Coenrad Klopper, a 16 year old boy,  who went to join his friends in a Fordsburg road on 10 March was cut down by police positioned in the headgear of the Robinson Mine. His mates fled when the shooting began ‘but came around the corner again to try and pick him up but… more shots were fired so we… had to leave him where he was’ )

    The grave plots are located at: GPS coordinates from the North: 26°11’44.8″S 28°01’22.0″E and GPS coordinates from the South: 26°11’45.3″S 28°01’22.4″E. Roughly in the area by the “little gum tree and the second tree to the left of centre at the end of the open space.”
