“One day when I grow up I will drive a (Insert name here)”. Little did we know that many of the cars that were around when we were young would be collectors items so many years later, and often would not be available at all anymore. I did this page as a retrospect of old cars, the images are small as I culled them from an old Autotrader Magazine at the time. I may not have all the models correct either, but it is still great to look back on what was available in the 60’s and 70’s. I have also included a few 80’s cars here as some are legends in their own right, unfortunately I do not have a model or year for some. Incidentally, the car that caught my eye when I was young was the Mini Minor, I still love them today and if I ever find one that I can afford I will buy it. Out of interest, My first car was a 1976 VW Beetle.
In February 2006 I bought a new car, and at that time the petrol price was R5.39 per litre of 93 octane, and the last price in my old log book is R10.83 pl (14/08/2012). It has spiked and dropped between then now and at the time of writing this addition (24/03/2017) it was sitting at R13.31 pl. Incidentally I paid R69 000 for that vehicle (an entry level Hyundai), and in the early 1980’s the most expensive car was a BMW635csi that cost R69 000!
