Victoria's New Job

Victoria had settled in quite well with the Tumbling Twinns, but finding gainful employment had so far evaded her. A lack of self esteem fueled by memories of the Plum sisters had ensured that she just couldn't find anything that didn't tax her already nervous demeanour. She had hunted through the websites and wanted ads but nobody seemed to want a 23 inch Twinn who jumped when somebody went BOO! Even the C&D Detective Agency couldn't offer her anything so she was really in dire straits. In desperation she answered one more ad.

Sadly poor Victoria never realised the full implication of her new job and the affects it would have on her health. Suddenly she was working very long hours and coming home at ridiculous times of the day or night. Her roommates never seemed to see her anymore and when she was at home she invariably was asleep, often still clothed and occasionally facedown in her supper. Then she started to wear a scarf and the Twinns that saw her were shocked at how tired and worn out she seemed to be since she started with her new job.
Heather raised the issue during a staff meeting at C&D. "Caitlyn, I am concerned about Vickie, she just doesn't seem to be around anymore and when I do see her she looks very tired and depressed. What do you think I should do? I am very concerned about her."

"She started a new job recently didn't she? I expect she is just overworked Heather, but maybe you can ask Sarah Willow to pop in and take her medical bag with, if anybody can help her it will be Sarah."
"That sounds like a good plan, I will ask Sarah to go past there today, I know Vickie gets home this week at 4pm after her shift, maybe we can find out what's going on."
"I will give Sarah some secret recipe special Caitie biscuits to take with, they are always handy to have when one is feeling down, and give her this lollipop from the pair of us." Dawn, a great believer in the therapeutic qualities of biscuits offered.

Sarah was duly asked to stop by in her official capacity as the local Twinn Physician and the next day she bumped into Victoria outside the door of the apartment. "Hi Sarah, it's nice to see you again." Victoria whispered.
"Hi Vickie, I am here in my official capacity, Heather tells me that you haven't been yourself lately and she asked me to stop by and see how you are, maybe give you a tonic or a packet of biscuits."

Victoria whispered, "it's true Sarah, I have been feeling very poorly lately, and to make matters worse have been working really long hours."
Victoria opened the door and they went inside. Sarah could see that Victoria just wasn't herself. "Have you settled in properly? is there anything you need?" Sarah put the kettle on, "Let me make a nice cup of tea and you go get into your PJ's and I will examine you and see what we can do to make you feel better."
"Thanks Sarah."
The tea made, Sarah went to the bedroom where Victoria lay listlessly in bed. "Now tell me what's wrong?"
"I am really tired Sarah, I have been working very long hours and my throat is very sore and I am going hoarse."
"It sounds like you are coming down with Twinn Flu, but it's not the season yet. There may be some other reason, lets examine you quickly." Sarah took Victoria's temperature but it was normal. Her neck connector seemed a bit strained but that was all.

"What do you do at this company where you work Vickie?"
"Do you know when you phone the clock on the telephone? and somebody answers and tells you the time?"
"Yeeesssss.... don't tell me.. you work for them?"
"Yes, and its terrible, I sit there all day and answer the phone: ".......when you hear the signal it will be 12:20 and 10 seconds. When you hear the signal it will be 12:20 and 20 seconds... the whole day Sarah. I spend all day answering that phone and telling people the time. I don't get a moment to even draw a breath or go down to the little Twinns room!"
Sarah couldn't help but burst out laughing. "But don't they have a recorded message which they play back?"
"Not these guys, they do things on the cheap! The tape recorder is worn out and too expensive to replace so they are using Twinns and other dolls to do the menial work. It's so bad I have even been having nightmares about giant clocks chasing me down the passage!"
"Well my friend, I am afraid you are going to have to quit this job. At the rate you are going I will end up having to do neck surgery on you and that won't be fun."
"But I need this job Sarah, I have to be able to pay my share of the rent and food and if I can't I am afraid that I will have to leave and go back to the Plum Sisters in disgrace and have them telling me "I told you so!" I will have let down those lovely Emmas that got me away from there in the first place.

"Don't be silly, nobody will make you go back to the Prune sisters. You resign from that job immediately and rest for a week. I will give you a sick note and you can use that as a reason to quit. I will ask around and see if anybody is looking for a hard working Twinn. Something will come up, don't you worry about it. Remember, we are all Twinns, we are all part of the whole and we wont send you packing because you are down or can't pay the rent. I will ask Brenda if she can't make contact with the 2 Emmas and see what they can suggest. "
"Thanks Sarah," Victoria said weakly. "I feel better already. I will do what you say and I will make a start on those biscuits ASAP."
"Well, those biscuits are an old Caitie folk medicine and have you ever seen a sick Caitie?"
"Not really. I just know that Caities are real hard workers and high spirited."
"There you go.... what won't kill will just fatten. Oh, and before I forget; Dawn and Cait also sent a lollipop to cheer you up."

And so Victoria resigned from her job and after a week (and many biscuits later), was able to talk once more. Jenni Amanda, the editor of the Hollow Times, heard about her plight and was able to offer her a position as a cub reporter and she is doing very well at it.
Dawn reckons that it was really those biscuits that helped Victoria.
