Early one morning, Virginia found Jennifer Mae in the kitchen with 3 fortune cookies. "Hiya Jen, are you trying your luck with fortune cookies now?"
"Oh Hi Virginia, nope, my cousin Rory in Pennsylvania sent me these, she asked if I could help her out with writing fortunes for her because she has to make a trial batch for export. She just doesn't have the time to do the fortune side of the cookies."
|
 |
"You mean to say that you just make the fortunes up as you go along?"
"Well, fortune cookies are not an exact science."
"Unlike tea leaves and crystal balls huh Jen?"
"Don't let Brenda hear you say that Virginia, somehow Brenda has a direct line to the future which I don't have."
"I wonder what does my fortune hold Jen? May I open a cookie?"
"Sure, go ahead, these are just for experimentation anyway."
So Virgina broke open the fortune cookie and took out the fortune from inside it and opened it up.
|
 |
"What's it say?"
"It says "Do not take everything at face value because things are not always what they seem."
"Hmm... the old fortune number 4325 from the "Fortune Cookie Fortune Compilers" handbook."
"You mean to say there is a book that they get these things out of?"
"Exactly Virginia, that's why Rory is going to make up a batch with all new fortunes in it. None of the old fortunes out of a book, but proper ones which I am going to help write. The biggest problem is that there are no real fortune cookies for Twinns, and we hope to be able to capture that market."
"That sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun Jen, May I help?"
"I am sure we can find somehow to rope you in Virginia, I will mail Rory and see how many fortunes she needs written. Then we can make a start."
"Jenni, do you know that before I left the Continuum I opened a fortune cookie, and do you know what it said?"
"Hopefully it was good news...."
"It read "Pack your bags without delay; to Africa you'll go away"."
"Wow! it came true huh?"
"Let's put it this way, I made it come true."
|
 |
On her way to mail Rory, Jennifer bumped into a Twinn who had a paperbag on her head. She looked vaguely like Caitlyn. "Hullo mysterious disguised stranger, may I ask why you have a paperbag on your head?"
"Sshhh Jennifer. It's me, Caitlyn. I am in disguise."
"Caitlyn? no ways!" Jennifer joked. "I would never have recognised you."
|
 |
"Seriously though Cait, why are you in disguise and who are you hiding from?"
"I'm not really hiding, it's more a form of silent protest."
"Aaaah, you are being obstinate."
"Not quite. It's a long story, but it has to do with how we pronounce our names."
"I know how to pronounce your name. It's Kate-Lyn. Or isn't it?"
"Apparently not, from what I hear Caitlyn is actually pronounced Kat-LEEN or sometimes KATlin. But never Katelynn. And, to make matters worse it also depends on which side of the Atlantic you live on--and/or the degree of Celtic identity you have. It also depends on what laws of phonetics come into play as English pronunciation vs. Irish/Scots Gaelic, vs. American English are different."
Jennifer pondered this information for a moment, "But Cait, you are in the Southern Hemisphere, and are neither Irish, Scots, English or American, you are in South Africa where half of the people don't even speak English anyway. You do know they do things differently here so just get your head out of that bag, and come and help Virginia and I to sort out these fortune cookies or I will have to get your official sword out and we will have to rename you Koekemoer!"
Caitlyn gave a mock salute. "Yes boss, no boss, three bags full boss! Where do I sign up for the fortune cookies? and what is a Koekemoer anyway?"
"Huh! I have no idea what a Koekemoer is, but trust me, you don't want to use it as a name! Now go see Virginia, she is temporarily in charge, and, to help you see much better you can wear my Groucho Marx disguise until you have given up on your silent protest! Now, where did I put my list of things to ask Rory?"
And so Jennifer headed off to the computer to mail Rory, while Caitlyn/Katleen/Katelyn/Koekemoer went looking for Virginia wearing her new disguise. "Hmm, this could come in quite handy when I am doing surveillance again. I must get a few pairs for the C&D Detective Agency official disguise kit."
|
|
Caitlyn decided that she had better not use her disguise too often or it wouldn't be effective as a disguise, so she went and changed and then set out to find the newest fortune cookie compiler.
Virginia was where Rory had left her last, busily scribbling way at strips of paper. "Hullo Cait, how have you been? I am busy helping Jennifer with these fortune cookies."
"Hi Virginia, I am fine thanks, I just bumped into Jenni and she said I must come lend you a hand."
"Oh goodie, because this is hard going, I am not really an expert when it comes to compiling things like this, it's harder than it seems."
"Let me read what you have so far, maybe I can think of something."

"Those aren't too bad Virgina. How about this one. "As your won-ton soup starts to congeal, You'll get a note from Madame Heel!"
"Oh no Cait, that's enough to make anybody run away. Imagine getting a note from Madame Heel!"
"It is kinda scarey I suppose, but we get lots of correspondence from her back at the office."
"You do? but you were responsible for putting her in jail in the first place."
"Well, she has this grudging respect for us, I suspect she admires us because we nabbed her."
"Do you think she was always such a baddie?"
"I don't know Virginia, although I have seen some interesting pictures of her when she wasn't scheming and plotting." Cait reminded herself to show Virginia the picture of Madame Heel at a picnic when she was younger (and nicer).
