Military and Police Burials in West Park Cemetery. Johannesburg.

West Park Cemetery is situated on Beyers Naude Drive and is still in use today. The first burials took place in the cemetery during the early 1940's and some of the war graves are amongst the first graves in their respective sections. The cemetery is divided into a number of areas, each catering to different religions and nationalities. There is an extensive Commonwealth War Graves plot with 472 burials in it, as well as a much smaller SADF Plot and a seperate Police Plot. The cemetery contains 617 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War and 21 war graves of other nationalities and 7 non-war burials in the Commission's care. 69 Servicemen and women who were cremated in Braamfontein Crematorium during the Second World War are remembered on a marble plaque behind the Cross of Sacrifice. The Jewish section of the cememtery also has a small military plot as well as a Holocaust Memorial. Images open in a new window.
