The Victoria Cross was a very popular theme for the makers of tobacco and cigarette cards. Smoking was much more acceptable way back then when many of these cards were created and collected. Soldiers were an excellent source of income for cigarette makers, and while I am no expert I suspect there were many more cards available using the VC as a theme than I know about. The cards I am displaying here are reproductions of Gallaher Cigarette Cards by Card Promotions in 2003, and are from my own small collection and they tie into existing pages on the blog. As usual this is a work in progress and it appears as if there are 8 collections in this series (series 6 being very rare). It is interesting that at the time these were issued some of the men who were awarded the VC were in the field or had been killed during early war years.
