Wallace (Wally) Arnold Oakes GC.

Wallace (Wally) Arnold Oakes (23/04/1932 – 12/06/1965), a traindriver with British Rail, was awarded the George Cross posthumously for his bravery on 5th June 1965.

The Citation, recorded in the London Gazette published on 15 October 1965, Supplement: 43793, Page: 9767, reads:

“Wallace Arnold Oakes (deceased), Locomotive Driver, British Railway Board Crewe (Sandbach).
Mr Oakes left Crewe driving the steam locomotive of a relief express passenger train. The train consisted of ten coaches and was reasonably well filled with passengers. When about seven miles from Crewe travelling at nearly sixty miles per hour the engine cab was suddenly filled with smoke and flames blowing back from the firebox. The fireman at once climbed through the side window and somehow managed to get on the cab steps where he extinguished his burning clothing by rubbing himself against the plating. He could not see into the cab but realising the brake had been applied he remained on the step until the train stopped. The flames subsided at once and he-entered the cab to find that Oakes was missing; he saw him lying on the cutting slope just ahead of the cab. His clothing was severely burnt and the flesh beneath had suffered similar to an extent described later as 80 percent of the body. Oakes was however still able to speak at that stage but was dazed. The first person to make an inspection of the controls was a fireman from an up train which was stopped to pick up the injured men. He found the brake fully applied, the regulator partly open an the blower valve open. It seems apparent therefore that Driver Oakes instead of quitting the cab as soon as the blow-back occurred remained to apply the brake, open the blower and probably close the regulator partly. The position in which he was found shows that he did not leave the engine until it had come to rest. Mr Oakes must have been aware that to remain at the controls of the locomotive was a grave risk to his own life. Nevertheless he applied the brake full and took all the measures he could to reduce the effect of the blow-back. Mr Oakes gallant action showed that his first thought was for the safety of his passengers and he thereby sacrificed his life, for he died a week later. He set an outstanding example of devotion to duty and of public service.”

Sadly, he was buried in an unmarked grave in St Matthew’s Churchyard, Haslington, Cheshire. Since his death, Wally Oakes GC has had two locomotives named after him, and there is a plaque in his memory at Crewe Railway Station.

The headstone took a campaign through a national Railway Magazine to raise the funds to be erected. It came about through a request that Mark Green had from the magazine for a picture of Wally as his medals were being sold (bought by Railway Museum in York) and they didn’t know he was in an unmarked grave.

19D – 3328 at Coligny

Class 19D 3328 is plinthed in Coligny and is well looked after by a local businessman who uses the plot as an advertisement for a local garden centre,  it is even been adorned with cherubs and garden gnomes! However the important thing is that the loco is in a good condition. More about this loco (and others) may be found at Old Steam Locomotives of South Africa

Surprisingly enough her cabside plate is till present. Unfortunately the local idiots have left their mark.

She is looking much better than most of the plinthed loco’s though, which is a good thing. So thanks to all those who are ensuring her survival. I wish that was true of all the other plinthed steamers from the past.

10BR-750 Plinthed at Roodepoort Station

This locomotive stands in the grounds of Roodepoort Station, surprisingly it is in a reasonably good condition, given the decline in the area in general. Unfortunately hawkers have taken root, erecting plastic roofs and using the cab as a storage area.

The loco, a class 10BR, (one of 15), was built in 1910 at the North British Loco Company Ltd. and went into service in 1910.

It was withdrawn in 1972, Unfortunately the information plaque is obscured by a large piece of plastic which makes it impossible to read completely, but the plaque identifies this loco as being number 750. This loco is over a century old!

When I took these pics in 2009 she was already looking bad, I would hate to know what she looks like now. Google Earth has a 2014 image of her and she was still there at that point but was covered in graffiti. The co-ordinates are:   26° 9.554’S,   27° 52.183’E.

Millsite continued (3)

I walked Millsite on four separate occasions, and it is a depressing place, but the pain is over as the collection is dispersed. I have over 400 images that I took there, and most have never seen the light of day. This page is a general hodge-podge of pics, I make no excuses for quality as I do not recall ever having a decent day of sunny weather while I was there. Images open in a new tab.

Millsite continued (2)

Continuing from Page 1, Millsite does not only have derelict steam engines, but it also has derelict electrics and coaches. Unfortunately though, given the awkward situation of these photography is a really hit and miss because you can never really get a full view of what you are photographing. This page deals with the electrics, coaches and other bits and pieces.

Update: 03/02/2016. It appears as if Millsite is being cleared with some locos being moved by road to Bloemfontein. (See the list on the first page), unfortunately it seems as if 4E-E219 is up for disposal. However, this has not been confirmed, but she is still in place in August 2016, however ES-E511 and 1E-01 were both moved to Bloemfontein.

Class 19D-2650 “Cheugnette”

lass 19D – 2650 “Cheugnette” is one of a batch built by the Friedland Krupp Works in Germany in 1938. She has a Vanderbilt Torpedo tender and 235 of these locomotives were built. She is operated by Friends of the Rail and is one of their workhorses for day trips. I took this trip with them to Cullinan to commemorate the 150th years of Railways in South Africa

Long may she grace the steel road.

Class 25NC -3472 “Elize”

Update 15 December 2019:  it was announced that the Board of Directors voted that Reefsteamers be placed into voluntary liquidation, with the depot closing on 16 December 2019.

“Elize” was the first steam locomotive I had been behind since 1981, and she is an impressive machine. Considered to be the “Cadillac” of South African steam locomotives she is fitted with a mechanical stoker, roller bearings and all the “mod cons” and is considered to be a “modern” locomotive. She was placed back into operation at Reefsteamers in 2006, and while very powerful and modern, is a bit too heavy on coal and water for day trips. She is however, a very impressive machine, and her sheer size alone make her worth seeing in action.

Reefsteamers has a proper history of this locomotive and while I know they do not like using her for short tours they still enjoy watching her in action. Sadly worn tyres and flanges have temporarily grounded her, but she is sure to grace the iron road once of these days.

Class 15F – 3046 “Janine”

Update 15 December 2019:  it was announced that the Board of Directors voted that Reefsteamers be placed into voluntary liquidation, with the depot closing on 16 December 2019. 

Class 15F 3046 was put back into steam in May 2010 after many years of work by Reefsteamers. She is a firm favourite amongst passengers and has ventured quite far from her home in Germiston. She is also the only operational 15F in South Africa.

My first viewing of her was on 23 May 2010 when she was double headed with Class 25NC Elize. It was a day of steam and I am happy to say this loco was the star. I hope that she graces us with her presence for many years. In August 2010 she was named Janine and has since started to make her mark on the rails.

When she was still a “young lady”  3046 gained fame for having pulled the royal train in 1947, with the then-princess Elizabeth on board. Built in 1945, she was retired from service in 1988 but kept intact by Spoornet as a reserve and underwent steam testing for 4 consecutive years, until use of steam traction officially ended in 1992.

In late 2016, 3046 was renamed “Vreni”  (pronounced ‘Freeny’ in English)

Live Steamers

Before I came to the UK I lived very close to the Rand Society of Model Engineers that meets at Len Rutter Park in Florida. I used to do a quick look around whenever I saw they were open and was always amazed at the quality of the live steamers that ran there. Quite a number of the locos were based on real SAR machines, and the level of detail was astounding. Unfortunately between here and there all of my images went missing and I have not worked out where they are at this moment, so these images are really duplicates of what I had before. Hopefully one day I will find the images, as well as the many hours of video I shot there.

Incidentally one of the locos from Sanrasm has been plinthed outside the workshop, and it is not too far from another plinthed ex-Sanrasm loco at Florida Junction. I have since photographed that loco and pics are available on that blogpost.

Class 12AR-1535 “Susan”

My favourite locomotive; Susan, was a regular on my daily trips to work when I was stationed at Germiston Telecomms Depot during 1985/86. She usually lived on a short spur at the end of the mainline platform and served as the pilot loco for Germiston. When I left the railways I also left Susan behind, never considering that one day she too would face possible extinction.

I was very glad to hear that she still survives, and was fortunate enough to see her make her debut at Reefsteamers after a long period of being “unroadworthy”. She is still a perky loco, and as shiney now as she was in 1986. I hope that she lives for much longer, and that the effort put into her by Reefsteamers does prove to be worthwhile.

She was built in 1919 as a 12A by North British Locomotive Works for service for heavy coal trains on the Germiston to Witbank line.  Along with her sisters she was reboilered a few years later with a new boiler (Her current boiler was installed in 1955) and redesignated 12AR. Susan eventually fortunately found employment in the 1980’s as the Germiston Station pilot, which was where I saw her many years ago. Unlike many other steam engines she never really retired, but was withdrawn from service with long standing issues. Reefsteamers repaired and returned her to steam in 2009. She was recertified in June 2012 which gives her a few years of life before major work is required in 3-6 years.

She is the last remaining class 12AR in the world (and the only one), and is the second oldest operating mainline locomotive in South Africa.  She a firm favourite with everybody, and is a tribute to those who built her, and those who maintain and drive her.  Long may she grace us with her presence. 

Update: Susan celebrated her 100th birthday in 2019, sadly shortly thereafter it was announced that the Board of Directors voted that Reefsteamers be placed into voluntary liquidation, with the depot closing on 16 December 2019.
