Captain Smith Statue

I was quite surprised to encounter Captain Edward John Smith when I visited Lichfield in late March 2015, I had totally forgotten about this monument, and I could have almost missed it if I had not decided to take a closer look at a statue in Beacon Park.

The statue was supposedly a very contentious one, originally intended for Stoke-on-Trent, it was supposedly rejected by the city and ended up being erected in Lichfield instead.

The statue has been a favourite in Lichfield, and naturally Stoke-on-Trent wanted their famous citizen back, but Lichfield was not budging.

Now Stoke-on-Trent is sulking and Lichfield is gloating…

Actually, that story may not be the truth according to some sources. Unveiled in 1914, it was recently restored in time for the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.
