What can I say about Millsite? I did not see it in the glory days of steam, neither did I see it before the big cutting that occurred, for that matter I never saw it in good weather either! I visited at least 4 times and each time it was really hit and miss whether I would get in or not; it really depended on the security guards. The locos that I saw were mostly in a semi derelict state, and most were missing their bearings and any metal bits that could be carried away in a Checkers trolley. Because I am not a loco ID fundi I have had to rely on various people who have been able to ID locos for me, or I have managed through a process of elimination to put a class and number to a sleeping behemoth.
Unless something is done these locos will slip into history forever, IMHO it is too late, and we will probably loose them as we did Sanrasm. There is talk of a museum, but I am afraid these are way too far gone for a museum. These images were taken in 2009 and 2010 and are of the identified locos, the electrics and coaches I will load in a separate page.
Update: Feb 2015. It appears as if Millsite is being cleared, with a number of locos being taken by road to Bloemfontein. Unfortunately a lot of the locos are also being sold for scrap, and from what I can see this includes 8DW-1197, 10C 772/776, 14R-1733/1759, 24/3645, GM-2292, 15AR-1820, 15BR-1979, 15CA-2040/2041/2039/2077, 15A-2803, 15CA-2820/2825/2833/2836/2853/2060, 16R-794, 16CR-840 16DA-870, 19A-685, 15F-2902/2908/2913/2929/2934/2936/2940/3001/3075/3079/3098/3103. GEA-4022, 19D-2540/2709, S-360, S2-3765, and 4E-E219
Update: 19 June 2016. Condensor 25-3451 and 19D 2540 were moved from Millsite to Reefsteamers in Germiston. Also due to be moved to Reefsteamers are a 3BR (1474?) and 14CBR. 6A-462 has been moved to Kimberley Mine Museum. The derelict District Surgeons coach has been moved to Sandstone. Two of the electrics (ES-E511 and 1E-01 were both moved to Bloemfontein, 4E-E219 was probably scrapped.
