Milner Park Special Graveyard

[ Braamfontein Cemetery ] [ Brixton Cemetery] [ East Rand and Elsewhere ]
[ Anzac Memorial in Brakpan] [ Casualty List ] [ Milner Park Graveyard ]

How this page came about: Way back when I was photographing the Rand Revolt graves I heard that there was a mass grave in Braamfontein Cemetery of Rand Revolt casualties. I did not see any confirmation of this on the maps or find anything in the registers to confirm or deny it. In 2020 when I started to relook the casualty list this issue came to the fore once again but with an added twist. Some of the death notices made mention of a “Special graveyard Milner Park”

A temporary cemetery was set up in Milner Park on 12 March 1922 and presumably casualties were hurriedly interred there while military and strike action was going on.  Reportedly the last of the 33 military and 29 striker/civilian remains were removed on 5 May 1924 re-interred in Brixton or Braamfontein or elsewhere. I obtained a partial list courtesy of Alan Buff and Sarah Welhan Dove that has answered some questions. That list contains 37 names, some of which were reburied in the NC plot ranging from grave 23218 to grave 23132. That list also shows 1 unknown male, 4 males with surnames only. I was not able to positively match those with any death notices.

The reason I was unable to find anything in the Braamfontein register was because I was not looking under the correct date (05 May 1924) and I was expecting to find a specific page/plot that had the information in it. However, what I eventually did find was a note in the one column of the register that mentioned the graveyard and of course the casualties were  listed alphabetically.

The following casualties are known to have been buried in the special graveyard in Milner Park as this was mentioned on their death notices. However, I did not find death notices for all casualties, so this may be incomplete.
