The memorial, with its poignant figurine by Phil Minaar is a simple yet effective structure, and it encompasses the many servicemen who know no grave but the sea. It was originally intended to unveil the memorial on 18 February 1996, but bad weather caused this date to be moved to 24 March 1996. The bronze statue is of the upper part of a soldier standing with one hand on the rail of a sinking ship, his other and hand and eyes are stretched upwards.
