Like most children Caitlyn is fascinated by fire engines, and one fine day the local Fire Department came to our offices to get tips on how to look cute from our resident cute person. Of course Caitlyn decided to have some fun and try bum a ride on the fire engine. She confided later “there is little chance of those guys looking cute.”
When they arrived she jumped with joy and immediately dashed over to the door of the fire engine, “Please Mr. Fire Person, may I have a ride????”
“Such a polite child”, the one fireman remarked.
“And so cute.” the other said.
“Nobody can resist such blue eyes,” they all agreed. “Climb on board Caitlyn”.
“Oh, this is exciting, can I turn on the siren? and the bell? is there a fire we can go to?? What does this button do? and this lever?”
The fireman laughed, “steady on then Caitlyn, not so fast, a good fireman never rushes around haphazardly. It is a very responsible job and we are always ready to help people, but we never panic because that could be very dangerous.”
A suitably impressed Caitlyn listened enthralled as the firemen told her about some of their adventures, she was sure she too could be a fireman, but would have a slight problem with the height requirements.
And so the firemen had to go back to their station, leaving Caitlyn very upset because she couldn’t be a fireman. But, I explained later, not everybody is cut out to be a fireman, it’s a calling, rather than a profession. Caitlyn understood, but later that afternoon I found her looking wistfully at a garden hose. What could have been going through her mind I wondered?
No fires were extinguished during the filming of this adventure and no arsonists were robbed of victory. Oh, the doctor says that the fireman’s nose will heal and the bruises are temporary.
