In 1980 when I went into the military system we were issued with “Stepouts” which was another form of torture that the SADF invented to make our lives miserable. However, stepouts were smart, and we had no choice but to keep them smart or we were in the hot smelly stuff. The adornments for stepouts included the two collar tab badges to match the beret, chrome buttons, shoulder flashes, theoretically a name tag, possibly a marksman proficiency badge, and eventually a row of medals (in my case I got those 35 years after the fact). The shoulder flashes always interested me, and I used to collect them at one point, although all I really have now are photographs of them.
